Notes from his Speech at Magnificent Men! Leadership Lunch, Fairmont Palliser, Calgary, AB by Don MacInnis

Leadership…. do something that will make a difference.

Lead somewhere… that matters.  Be really clear about the Where… you want to lead people…

Lead someone…   People, players, employees  – want to win.

Steve Jobs … His biography is difficult to read, annoying but brilliant.  Jobs recruited key people by saying – You don’t come to Apple unless you want to change the world…

Big personality stuff is a part of leadership…. be out there, speaking, delivering messages about the where your organization is heading.

Small personality stuff… really listening, really knowing… leading from the front and learning enough through listening to lead from behind, too…

Am teaching at McGill… Making the Future…   Learning the present, learning the past… you need some thought time to think about the future that you want to make… personally, provincially, nationally, globally….   The where, knowing that inside each one is that who that is looking… to make a difference

Canada is a great place for thinking the future and have the conversations and Alberta is also a great place for these kind of conversations too… Think the future… What is that future that you want…

What’s in us that we can be…  This is a central piece for all of us…

No better time to find a direction that is big enough and to find the leadership to get us there…

Leading in a quiet way can happen too…   We need people who can stay invested and engaged through the great moments and… the difficult challenging moments…

A lot of leadership is circumstantial…  the circumstances arise and you find out what you can do as a leader…   I didn’t know if I could do it, but I didn’t know I couldn’t either.  Be willing to try…

As long as I didn’t give up on the possibility of success, then who knows what the outcome will be…

There is a lot in all of us if we don’t allow that there isn’t…
